From the depths of 2010’s, a dark force stirs, reaching out to grasp our oh-so-delicate Bound by Time…
Tendrils of chocolaty malt rise like wisps of ages long forgotten; ages where IPAs came in all colors and manifestations. Let us take you back to a dark time, a time when roasty malt and citrusy, pine-driven hops sang in cacophonous discord.

16oz can, date stamped 12/01/23
L: dark brown colored ale with a rocky, khaki colored head that holds great retention
S: darkened grain, cocoa, dank citrus
T: chocolate, nut, roast, char, brown sugar, oats perhaps; citrus & pine for hops
F: fuller body, smooth, ample carbonation, balanced finish for a Black IPA
O: good beer. Reminds me of the pretty much extinct brown IPA

Edmund’s Oast Brewing Company one of the best in the business, so it’s only appropriate to rated this particular ale. It’s a good Black India Pale Ale.

Picked up a 16oz can from The Blue Door Bottleshop in Hendersonville 1-27-23 for $4.75. Canned 12-29-22; consumed 8-23-22. Cold stored since purchase/
Neer poured dark brown with a nice off white head.
Nose was very nice upon pouring; very citrus forward with some tropical fruit notes.
Taste is spot on as the medium roasted malt base emits notes of chocolate and a nice touch of roast. Hopping is significant as i am getting peach and orange. Finishes with a background dose of citrus rind that leads to a beautifully balanced finish; 5/10 on my bitterness scale.
Mouthfeel is light to medium bodied and refreshing.
Overall a very nice black IPA, will definitely look for this again!

First review. Canned on 12/29/2022. Poured into a Spiegelau IPA glass. It's an unusual color for a Black IPA: a dark amber-ruby with more than two fingers of fluffy, light khaki-colored head and thick, clinging lacing. It's an elegant pour although it looks more like a Red Ale. The nose is an interesting blend of grapefruit, pine needles, and tobacco smoke with just a whiff of sweeter malt as it warms. The taste is dry and quite bitter with hints of cigar ash and char, along with notes of resinous pine, grapefruit pith, and lemon peel. The hop bill isn't identified on the website; it says merely "citrusy, pine-driven hops." As it warms in the glass there is a touch of malty sweetness but it doesn't overcome the overall bitterness. This ale has a nice, creamy mouth feel with pleasant carbonation, and the 7.5% ABV gives it good substance. Overall, Bound by Darkness is quirky in a good way (particularly the color) and most enjoyable.
