Every once in a while we discover something truly special hidden in our barrel cellars. On our most recent expedition we came across a hidden gem, something that glinted in the darkness and demanded our attention.

After half a year in ex-Madeira barrels, this decadent barleywine displays dazzling notes of spiced apple pie drizzled with caramel and rich fig compote. It’s not something to be passed over.

A: Pours a dark murky brown color. A very small beige head forms and recedes to basically nothing after a minute. Which just leads to a viscous liquid to look at.
S: Oh this is impressive. Big toasted and toffee like malts, wood and vanilla. Mixed with a vinous grape/fortified wine like character that melds perfectly together.
T: All the character from the aroma is here as well. Toasted malts, toffee, plenty of sweetness, wood/vanilla/barrel character. Along with that vinous grape and fortified wine like flavor. Darker fruits like plums and raisins. Its all well done, but with just a bit more harshness to it. It can be very aggressive and abrasive, along with a big alcohol presents.
M/O: A full viscous and chewy body. The bare minimum of carbonation. This becomes sticky, overly syrupy, with noticeable alcohol burn. All that is somewhat to be expected, and not displeasing. Though it does take its toll after a bit. Still, saying all that, I'm enjoying sipping on this.

Oh, this is a big one. I don't think I have had a big abrasive barrel aged booze bomb in a while. This certainly fits the bill. I do very much enjoy it, even if the "biggness" of everything does get in the way just a bit. Which keeps this from being in the upper tier for me, but again, still very enjoyable.

A: Hazy brown, half-finger white head, quickly dissipating.

S: Toffee and Tobacco right away, slight port-astringency, notes of toast and jam are faint but present

T: Madeira comes through right away, marrying well with the strong toffee notes and hints of hazelnut with a pleasant but mild bite in the finish, there is mild (and slightly cheesy) funk coming through as well that almost registers as a faint suggestion of brettanomyces.
This beer masks its booziness very well. There is a slightly unpleasant cherry cough syrup flavor in the finish.
M: Thick and clingy, sits on the tongue in an unpleasant way.
O: I think this beer is pretty lovely overall, my biggest unique quibble would be the mouthfeel (see above), my biggest general quibble would be the appearance, but given that it's a barleywine and they all kinda look that way, I'm hesitant to take serious issue with it.
