Little Maggie is almost clear dark brown, with a rich mahogany patina (SRM 25-28). A two inch, light chestnut head slowly recedes and is creamy all the way down. Fine lacing forms patches and islands above what becomes a very clear beer in a Simpli pint glass.
Charred sugar opens and is similar to burnt marshmallow without the sweetness. Toasted malt and toffee follow, with peanut shells and charcoal late.
Sweetness is low and matched by malt bitterness. Brazil nuts and faint banana bread lead to light molasses. A long, toasted malt finish gradually fades, while roasted peanuts build as it warms.
The texture is similar to combed wool and the body is medium to light. Alcohol is above expectations and carbonation is moderate.
This is a nice late summer beer that goes down more quickly than expected. One could easily consume several while chatting with friends in a dark, old-world pub.
