Pint on draught at the brewery. Served in a plastic cup (during COVID 19 restrictions). It pours a turbid, pale, dirty-yellow color with a thin, creamy, milk-white head and thick coating of lacing inside the glass. The smell is malt-forward but with notes of lemon peel, grapefruit, onion, and whiffs of peach and melon. The taste opens dry and bitter with lots of grapefruit rind and tart lemon. The citrus is augmented by a heavy dose of rye. About the only sweetness is provided by the malt in the background. It finishes dry and quite bitter (75 IBU) with a slight peppery astringency. Its mouth feel is thick and creamy with a pleasant level of carbonation and the 7% ABV is enough to give it substance without overpowering. A second pour is not a problem. Overall, Broken Ladder is a nice, bitter but easy-drinking American IPA. I think the rye notes really add to the flavor.
