Blind-tasted except for the beer's name and brewery/country, first review after adding this beer here...
L- WOW, something I've perhaps never seen before. The bottle was very well rested and chilled. I carefully eased off the cap and the neck of the bottle was loudly fizzing with 2Cm of foam, ie with a loud ongoing hiss! Poured gently at an angle and the fizzing continued hehe. This one needs to be poured reeeally slowly down the side of the glass. The sediment lifts at the end so I left 15-20ml behind. Poured it's looks like a Long Island iced tea, murky pale brown, 2Cm of off-white foam with a stripe of dark tan yeast sediment that was when I stopped the pour.
S- It smells quite piquant/bright, and no surprise darn yeasty too!
T- I don't even know this beer's style and so far I don't feel I've any matching clues. Oh ok, it's quite hoppy-bright but has some sense of balancing richness. Fears it might be a Belgian type Pale with overbearing dry hops are unfounded.
F- This was planned as 'a first beer of a session' so IDK it's ABV% but it shouldn't be too high. But I'm wondering if the plan went awry as this feels like a pretty solid proposition.
O- Beers I've planned ahead as '1st of a session' tend to be on the lighter/lightest end of the spectrum so they get a clean palate, and their typical subtlety gets max opportunity on a clean palate. This is surprisingly gutsy and as well comes over as having unexpected star quality. Bright/piquant but from trad hops (no bonkers lycheee-mangosteen marshmallow beard-guff here). The body feels something like ... 7.2% or so. A real surprise and seriously superbly put together beer. This brew honestly deserves to be winning medals, it's that stand-out and that good.
Scoring all done, now the reveal, I get to read the bottle lables to see what I missed! ===> Bottle refermented. Contains barley, wheat, chicory!? and spices. Now I recognise it, it's a chicory bulb on the lable, well that might be a first. Oh and it's 5%, seriously! Mad, it comes over as way more than that - well IMHO. Happy supping!
