It all started in 1883 with the development of the first passenger train direct to the Wildwoods. Reliable and steady with a smooth chug, it brought to life the idea of relaxing on a sandy beach with a cold drink in your hand. A refreshing house staple with a thoughtful balance of classic hops brewed to have you asking for repeated fills.

Poured from 12 oz. can into a shaker glass. The color is an almost clear amber with a finger cap of fluffy, bright white foam ad thick, soapy lacing. Its smell is primarily malty with whiffs of lemon and grapefruit. The taste opens malty and exceptionally bitter with lemon peel, grapefruit rind, and strong resinous pine sap. It's a clean, pleasant bitterness. As it warms a bit there is subtle caramel sweetness in the malt. The mouth feel is lite and clean with lively carbonation, and the 6.7% ABV (this batch) gives it good substance. Overall, 1883 is an impressive West Coast-style IPA and another fine offering from Mud Hen.

Purchased at Bound Beverage, Warrington, PA. $13.00/6pk 12oz cans
Pours a semi-translucent, golden yellow color. A dense, whitish, one finger head on the initial pour. Decent lacing left on the sides of the glass.
Aromas of pine and citrus.
A very nice IPA. A lemony, piney, slightly bitter taste. Very easy drinking. ABV is not noticeable.
Medium carbonation, thinner consistency.
My first brew from Mudhen Brewery and a very well done IPA. The IPA market is probably the most difficult category to stand out in. I’ve had so many IPAs it’s sometimes tough to differentiate between the IPAs from one brewery to the next. This is a good, easy drinking IPA that is well crafted…cheers!

This beer almost looks the part, goldish with hints of orange, a white head that leaves a nice sustaining film, cloudy at first but mostly chill haze as it clears up quite nicely; off to a potentially good start, slightly above average lacing.
Nice pungent nose on this beer, it is bright in the floral department, there is some light fresh smelling pine; a very light fruitiness but more in a sweet orange with a hint of pineapple kind of way...there is a pleasant malt presence lurking underneath as well.
The taste is quite lovely on this beer, the hops instantly hit; resiny, grassy and sappy, gives way to some orange like fruit on the finish, again a touch of fruit, pineapple...the malt is very well done on this beer, just enough heft and touch of sweetness to counteract all that resin like goodness.
Mouthfeel is decent, for 6.7% this thing drinks very nicely; barely teettering (spellcheck?) on medium body, spot on smooth carb, and a beautiful piney bite on the finish, good bitterness...I say decent mouthfeel because it is just ever so slightly chewier than I like an IPA but this is far from what other local places have dubbed "west coast" IPAs; finishes quite clean and dry.

2023 and not yet reviewed by this BA member. Two pours empty two twelve ounce cans into a clear glass liter mug. Although there's carbonation aplenty, there's not much of a head. That is preferred to the ever expanding foam that's become a byproduct of the modern IPA. The beer is brilliant, light copper-amber and rather translucent. Its aroma is just of hops, malt and yeast. That's also the taste, which shouldn't be underrated. This is a wonderful return to what IPAs really were and presents a great contrast to what American IPAs have become. It's really very simple, just nice barley malt carrying a piney hopped bite that dries out the malt sweetness at the finish. The ABV is nicely integrated into the taste and it's not so high that another or two would be a problem. There's no glass lacing, but that is really of no concern. Anyone that appreciates, or wants to experience what a real IPA is, needs to sample this.
