The first stop into the Wildwoods was a land known as the “Forest by the Sea” covered with wildly growing Holly trees all the way to the beach. The anticipation was bursting when you heard the Conductor call, “next stop Holly Beach”. This is the wheat beer you’ve been waiting for with notes of sweet orange peel and fresh ginger.

Can: Pour leans darker than expected, with more of a light its more amber and a large, pillowy cloud of white head that craters and laces the glass. The nose is a little light in strength, but it has the expected notes, including banana and some bread and a little bubblegum.

So the first sip has me a little surprised by the sweetness level - which isn't bad, just unexpected from the nose. The beer has a nice, soft feel, perhaps due to a very light amount of perceived carbonation. Banana and wheat-bread with something that balances the opening sweeter flavors - sort of a mix of grain, earthy herbs, and perhaps some citrus rinds. A nice, refreshing beer.

Appearance wise it is spot on, maybe little dark but it sports a cloudy burnished yellow with some orange hues, depending on light; the head is big fluffy and gelatinous; the retention isn’t much but I get a nice white film for the duration.

The nose mostly shows some clove ester presence, some light wheat and white bread character; the faintest bit of orange peel, shows mostly as it warms.

The taste is wheat, light bread; a perfect little dose of clove ester, light pepper like spice character, and a citrus peel bite, this is where this beer stands out to me; no sweet orange character just a drying tart presence that is unmistakably citrus like, same of the pepper bite, a great example of balance.

Mouthfeel; light, very soft, carbonation is great; Belgian to a tee, higher than normal but microbubbles smooth, that pepper note leaves a super light little bit of perceived bitterness; this is a clean drinking wit, the finish shows the orange as it lightly coats the back of my mouth with an ever so light residual orange tartness; this finishes incredibly clean

Mudhen Brewing Co. "Holly Beach Wheat"
12 fl. oz. can coded "DOB 04/05/23"; sampled on 07/21/23
$2.79 @ Total Wine & More, Cherry Hill, NJ

Notes via stream of consciousness: I'm glad to see that this is a Belgian-style wheat as opposed to a normally boring American. It's poured a very hazy golden body beneath a full head of rocky white foam. I'm getting Belgian yeast clearly in the nose with some clove and spiciness as well as some sweet malt. The flavor follows with some added citrus and a hint of ginger. It's sweet but it ultimately dries in the end, helped along by the spiciness from the yeast. It's nicely balanced by a moderate to median bitterness, and rounded with yeast character that pretty much equals the intensity level of the sweetish and wheaty malt. Nothing stands out too for, or fails to show enough. It doesn't seem to be a witbier yeast strain and I'm curious as to what they've used. In the mouth it's medium bodied on the fuller end, and gently crisp. I was thinking of this as a summer beer for some reason but it's got enough character that it could certainly be year 'round. Nicely done, and slightly unique.
