L- Superfically black, though I get a feint glint of ruby-red through the narrowest point of the chalice glass with a halogen torch head directly behind. This ABV% doesn't support head formation so there's just tiny patch of tan foam.
S- Wowser!! Liquorice and spices. It's hugely impactful but that cannot translate simply into a high rating, off-piste drama doesn't necessarily directly = a premium rating ... hmmm, how to rate...
T- Liquorice, star-anise ... I like star-anise but it's enough to made me involuntarily shudder! Aniseed, then a coal-tar-like roasty-smokey outro... Gawd what's in this thing. It's hugely pungent, don't plan on tasting anything delicate after this, really, my palate is being absolutely flattened.
F- Beguilling would be polite hehe. Complex, exotic, spices all over, ultra-pungent, deep, a slow-sipping beer for sure, perhaps best suited to winter when the palate can demand more pungency/complexity etc.
O- Heavens. Massive liquorice/anise and associated spice notes in a hugely pungent black beer style. One of the most pungent beers I've ever had - though it's ABV of 11% is * relatively * modest for the super-intensity of it's Taste+Feel.
This is one of the most challenging beers I've tried to rate (for context: of 1455 to-date). To be clear it's 11% but that isn't the issue at all, I've had plenty much higher than that, but its the bludgeoning flavour. If I were rating for Drama alone, this would be Top#10 - absolutely no doubt. Regular drinkability? - it wouldn't be in the Top#1000 it's wAAAAy OTT, knows it and isn't embarassed for a second; and that's what it's all about. Fun to try, but good grief I think I need to go and have a lie-down after this one....
440ml can BB: 30/04/2021 £6.75 bought from TremblingMadness/York as part of a mixed-case for home delivery to London
ps. I enjoy cooking Malaysian curries, I used to live there. I'm used to using SEAsian curry powders plus added whole spices incl star-anise to get the desired end point on the balance of flavours. The goal is an overall balance, perhaps with very subtle emphasis here and there as planned and added. - Ok, in that context the star-anise here is waaaaay OTT, it is so over-prominent it is detracting from the whole. In isn't clever or sophisticated; it's more unknowingly making a statement; an over blunt one for me. --- That said I look forward in future to revisit this listing and see what on earth others made of this beer!
