Poured from 12oz can into a dimpled mug. Canned 10/13/21.
Appearance: very dark brown-black in hue with minimal light let through; head is a thin layer of frothy tan foam. Easily passes for a stout or porter.
Smell: sweet, caramelly, molassesy, and bready; there are hints of date, raspberry, and chocolate in here as well. This beer definitely has big kvass energy. It's interesting, though it does lack maybe some of the roastiness you might expect in a beer of this color.
Taste: much like the aroma, but a little bit drier and with a hint of the roastiness that I thought was absent in the smell. There is a bit of missing je-ne-sais-quoi in this beer; that is, it doesn't really taste like a full-alcohol brew. But that said, it's an interesting dark treat and not bad for what it is.
Mouthfeel: medium body with a good level of carbonation and creaminess. Once again, Athletic is the best in the business at this.
Overall: an interesting beer, and while it's not perfect, it's damn good for NA.

On e of the Pilot Program series of beers from Athletic poured into a modified perfect pint glass. Tall dark tan/light brown head, recedes to about 1/8 inch thick layer of foam that lingers to the end. Almost no lacing. Smells like roasted malt, consistent with the name. Not picking up coffee or chocolate or any spice; just generic dark roasted malt. Taste is exactly the same. Mouthfeel is a nice combo of medium body with moderate carbonation. I'm not getting any weird after taste or vegetal flavors. Overall a nice dark NA beer but not as good as some that have supplemental aromas/tastes that include other flavors.
