8oz glass at Beer Revolution YEG Oliver Square. Once again, I am definitely happy to sample this outfit's offerings without having to park in downtown Calgary.
This beer appears a clear, dark orange-brick brown colour, with a thin cap of wispy and bubbly beige head, which leaves some decent pockmarked limestone wall lace around the glass as things slowly sink away.
It smells of lightly roasted, bready and doughy caramel malt, bittersweet cocoa powder, faint cafe-au-lait, and some ethereal earthy, musty, and dead floral hop bitters. The taste is gritty and grainy cereal malt, medium chocolate wafers, day-old coffee grounds, cold cream, a hint of anise spice, and more well-understated earthy, herbal, and floral hoppiness.
The carbonation is adequate in its structurally supportive frothiness, the body a so-so middleweight, and generally smooth, with nothing really getting in the way of a good time at this particular juncture. It finishes trending dry, the malt and cocoa essences fading fast.
Overall - this comes across as a pleasantly rendered version of the style (perhaps more English in its bearing, but that's up for debate). Simple, and easy enough to put back, especially given the less than standard ABV.
