Gras Mähen has a thick, creamy, ivory head, with a dark gold or amber appearance and splotchy lacing. The aroma is of honeyed bread crust. The flavor is of strong, spicy bitterness and honeyed brown bread crust. Gras Mähen has a medium body and a mostly-dry finish.

McAllister Brewing Company "Gras Mähen"
$6 / pint on tap at the brewery on 19 January 2019
Notes: 5.2% abv. I'm not real good with German but I believe the name means "grass mowing" which is kind of funny. I wouldn't call it a lawnmower beer though, it's got too much body and flavor and alcohol for that. It's a pretty good rendition of the style but I find the malt to be a little too flabby, and the hops to not be quite as crisp and sharp as they could be. Stylistically I'd put it into the southern German category which isn't even recognized, but exists. It's fuller than either a Czech Pils or northern German pils, with more malt fullness, and not nearly as bitter as a northern German pils. It's farmland pils; and you can argue all you like if you differ in opinion, I've heard it all before. Part of that has to do with the fact that it doesn't have absolute clarity, and the other part is the malt which seems a little more like a Munich helles. Sometimes in the south they're sold as kellerbiers. The hops can go either way in aroma, but they're not as snappy as you'll find in N. German pils or Czech Pilsner. They've got a large brewery here at McAllister, seemingly with lots of capacity, so I'm not sure why this isn't more polished.
