Our bold and demonic interpretation of an American style Barleywine. Brewed with malted and roasted rye and an array of caramelized malts. A homage to the hoppy American versions of the traditional English style. We further diverged from tradition and hit this beer with two healthy doses of piney, and juicy chinook hops. Dauntless notes of treacle tart, robust molasses, tree sap and peach cobbler.

Well Crafted Beer Company "Balroggen"
on tap at the brewery on 19 January 2019
Notes: Clear dark copper colored body beneath a creamy head of off-white foam. Good head retention and lacing. The aroma is caramelish and piney but not as malty as I might have expected from a barleywine - or is that the hops throwing it off? The flavor follows and the alcohol at 9.8% abv is very well hidden but the spiciness of the rye comes through within the otherwise caramelish malt. It's mainly a medium-dark caramel, what I would call red-brown, but there are some more golden notes as well, and even a darker edge that verges on becomeing almost burnt sugar. The piney hops remain and it's solidly bitter with a dry, spicy and piney finish. Medium bodied and crisp. Overall it's pretty decent but I have to wonder if the choice to combine Chinook hops and rye was the best way to go. I didn't brew it so I can't say what they were going for. Intense.
