Bought today from Tesco in London (first time I've ever seen it). 4-pack*440ml £2.25. BB: 31/07/2020
'Brewed by C&C Group at Wellpark Brewery'. Digging around online shows that's the Tennent Caledonian Brewey, and I note the beer's labelling does not mention that directly. That alerts me that this is perhaps a discount/adjunct/low-profile unbranded beer found in the major supermarkets... but I'm keeping an open mind as you never know.
The only ingredient listed on the can is 'British Malted Barley' and nothing else. That might be a statutory allergy warning, so again, it might turn out to be part-adjunct...
L- Very pale, clear, pours with 2mm white head.
S- Just some very mild grain.
T- Mild, generally lagerish, some hoppy dryness into the finish. The high CO2 risks giving it a slightly 'carbonic' taste. Someone is more acute taste-buds than me will doubtless find aspects that I've missed.
F- In my view it's over-carbonated in the mouth, or perhaps has added CO2 injected into it, to the extent it's a distraction.
O- I'm pleased that it doesn't come over as an obvious adjunct. There is also 'nothing wrong' with it too, just it's highly pedestrian versus today's choice of better beers. There's a thought, perhaps this is like the factory brews of the early 70s, Long Life, Double Diamond, Skol and so on? That whole genre of lagers back then that spawned the Campaign for Real Ale. Would I drink it again? I wouldn't buy it again, but if offered one at say lunchtime when I wanted a low-% beer it might work.
