Have your glass ready before removing the cap, just in case. This bottle is rested and chilled but on just slowly prising up the lid it begun to send foam out of the cap. Note: Apart from the front of the bottle's lable this is blid-tasted.
L- Lively! Incredibly dark. Even held right by a halogen bulb not a photon gets through. Most black beers are actually ultra-dark shades of red and deep ruby-red. Not this one it's properly black. Topped with one of the darkest tan foam heads. Despite a careful pour, the head started at about 7Cm and still seems to have a life of it's own.
S- It smells deeeply roasty and there seems to be a wine/brandy counter-point into the finish.
T- Starts slowly, deeply roasty, some coffee and charring, a brief rich note then BAAAAM! the liquor note hits; hard! That's mad. - This is really hard to rate. I mean having had it once, would I wish to buy more. Well, probably not, so that not a great outcome/rating right??
F- Considering it's only 12% it is a mega-hefty beer. It's usually around c17%+ they hit like this. It's incredibly pungent and has a body between very rich and becming slightly sweet.
O- I'd suggest starting this with some decent chill on it, as you can't rush this one (understatement of year!) and as it begins to warm it just gets increasingly hard-core. This is a beer that is made to share with another beer afficionado, 500ml for one is full-on (tho I'll try ;) This is not that straight-forward to rate, as as I found with some Icelandic black beers of high teens% there is a point you begin to ask yourself if the ABV% aspect becomes a distraction, if it's prominence is out of all known human-scale balance for a beer. Remarkably enough the same thought struck me here, and this is ONLY 12%. --- On the Taste+Feel I've had to notch it down to 3.5 each. It's an interesting beer to try, but it's impact is well out of scale to it's specs. Good luck with it!
500ml bottle. Bought from Trembling Madness, York, UK for home delivery.
Rated and reviewed above, now I get to read the lable for clues. This is the fun+learning bit, seeing what you missed. Oh wow, it's Brazilian, that's a surprise! Lable is marked 'Out 2021 Lote 002'. The back lable is in Portugese so not much to go on there, but I see it contains lactose.
