The Dunkel (German for dark) offers beer lovers balanced notes of chocolate, bread crust, and caramel. Pairs perfectly with the best burgers in Richmond at Wink's Bar around the corner on Water St.

This was another beer that I picked up on my recent run out west, as I bought it as I bought it at the Kentucky Blue Spirits at Cave Run in Salt Lick, Kentucky. Never had anything from these guys before and this wasn't a bad introduction to these guys, by any stretch!

Mahogany in color and uniform in hue, this was topped of by al lively, mocha head that was full of bubbles. That unevenly settled at a decent clip although the lacing left behind was quite sparse and thin. It would have been better to have had that, but it didn't detract from this by any means. Tons of plum and prune it the nose with a bit of dark bread underneath that, as the latter was more prevalent in the taste. Milk chocolate really emerged once this warmed with just a hint of dark nuts underneath that, as this was fun, a tad sweet, and plenty filling.

The carbonation was nice, even though I couldn't see any overt bubbles as the end result was a mouthfeel that was light, slick, and not sticky - in spite of the presence of caramel mentioned on the label. While there wasn't any date to be found on the can, this felt new and held up well as it was a solid take on the style. As this was nearly a session beer, a few of these in a sitting would be easy to quaff as it proves that dark lagers are just as enjoyable as their lighter counterparts. Glad to have given this one a go!

From the 16 oz can in a snifter via Bluejacket74! Cheers Dude!
This solid little dunkel pours a very dark brown with a moderate head of
khaki foam that settles to a thin ring with subtle lacing. Nose of dark coffee,
dark chocolate, and nutty malts amongst roasted goodness and sweet caramel
malts. Flavors hit a great note with dark malts, cola notes, coffee, subtle char, chocolate,
and hints of raisins and mellow caramel. Medium body, medium light teetering on
light carbonation that has some lift, and a sweet but balanced finish. Of Note warmth
gives rise to some herbal and grassy hops.

Overall----a very solid session made brew!

Cheers

Dunking and wheating their way through Germany's landscape of beer, the Richmond, KY brewers of Dreaming Creek dunks inside the dark German lager of Dunkel for a session that's both dark and drinkable.

Wink's Dunkel pours a rather dark brown color making it easily confused with porter, at least to the eye. As a frothy tan crown builds on the rim, the scent of coffee, cocoa, heavy toast and roasted nuts give a robust aroma to the nose. Sweeter once on the palate, the flavors of light caramel, honey and toasted graham cracker sets a malty upstart in taste.

As the flavors move along the tongue, the sweetness starts to drift and the toastier flavors gain quite a bit of ground. Hinting toward roast at times, the flavors of coffee, light char, dark chocolate and walnut pull from those initial aromas and apply a roastier and almost smoky character on the middle palate. Finishing fuller and roastier than the average dunkel, Dreaming Creek's finishes on heavier schwarzbier tone.

Medium bodied and finishing with a lightly spicy bitterness, the session closes with remnants of heavy toast and woosiness on the aftertaste, followed by the mid evaporative coolness of mint.

16 ounce can, no dating that I could find on the can or label. My buddy Denis bought this can at the brewery a couple weeks ago so hopefully it's fresh! Served in a pint glass, the beer pours a very dark brown color with about a half inch light tan head. Head didn't stick around for too long, and there's a small amount of lacing. I like the aroma, the brew smells mostly like dark bread and caramel, along with some chocolate and nuts. I think the taste is similar to the aroma but with a little more kick, and the dark bread, caramel, chocolate and nutty flavors were more balanced. Bit of spicy hop flavor noticeable too but the malt stands out here, as is expected. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it's smooth and easy enough to drink with a moderate amount of carbonation. I thought it was a tasty dunkel, definitely worth trying if you get the chance to!
