This husband and wife brewing duo (brew-o?) have made some really solid beers in the past, and this is a new one (canned on 3/24/22) featuring a DDH dose of Mosaic, Citra, and Strata hops. I mean, that sounds pretty damn good to me.
A: Nice pour here, especially at first glance... it really comes out of the gate impressive, but doesn't quite hold up after a few minutes pass. The initial decanting reveals a bountiful head of white foam topping out at a solid finger, leaving behind some decent lace in drippy patterns as it fades to, well, almost nothing. The color of the beer is an opaque orange, but without the "saturated" look I prefer in these super-hazies. It's just sort of dull looking, I guess.
S: Bright and punchy scent of tangerines and ripe passion fruit mingling with some mango and orange zest. Almost has a cotton candy-ish estery scent, but stops short of being cloying. Quite solid nose, for sure. I think I want it to be a little more intense considering the hops involved and the DDH aspect, but you can't have it all.
T: A bit modest here, as well... not quite hitting the way it might want to for some reason. I get some light tangelo and grapefruit with a bit of grassiness and slight dankness but it's sorta dusty and dry without much saturation to the hop character. I am used to Strata and Citra being a very powerful combo in some recent brews I've had that combine the two, and here it's just kind of... meh.
M: Great feel to this one, I will give them that. Has a slight slickness with the right amount of oomph in the mid-palate, followed by a crisp finish. I want more hop aspects, for sure, but at least this drinks solidly and goes down easy. Kind of has a "crossover" appeal, in my opinion, with a "lighter" IPA style that feels a bit more mainstream. Not sure if that's really good or bad, nor do I know if it's here or there for this review, but even though I think this could probably be a lot better, it's definitely worth a drink. I kinda want SC to go back to making dark milds and English porters, though, honestly. The world (especially the MA/NE area, locally speaking) does not need more IPA-obsessed brewers.
