Matcha is a special green tea made from the sprouts of camellia sinensis grounded in stone mill. Much appreciated in Asian cuisine for its flavor and color, it is used in desserts such as Shukurimu, the Japanese version of French Choux Cream.

This beer is our interpretation of this pastry: a combination of matcha and vanilla with the creaminess of flaked wheat and oats, finishing with massive amounts of hops.

16oz can

Pours two fingers of white head into my willi becher glass, a little soapy, fades quickly. Initial lacing looks questionable. I can’t in good faith say the body looks good, a lot of white sediment floating around. The haze is not flattering either, makes the green color look like vomit, the coloring would go much better in a clear beer. Zero visibility. Doesn’t look too great so far.

Nose is…odd. You get that earthy matcha, but it is quickly interrupted by citrus, noticeable pineapple. Again, not sure how well this works with the beer style, citrus and matcha seem to kinda clash. All things considered, it smells pretty decent, fresh, but definitely not a slam dunk.

Yeah flavor is super weird. Citrus hits first, more effervescent and crisp, than tropical and heavy like the nose seemed. Matcha comes midway and mixes with the other flavors. Finishes with the matcha completely taking over and “smoothing” things out, maybe a tiny bit of vanilla in there as well. I will give this credit for the nice transition it has between flavors, this clearly identifies each taste well. Still, not sure how well this works, these just feel like two completely clashing flavors and I don’t think it goes well.

Mouthfeel also has a lot of impact on the crisp start and the smoother finish. Body is definitely on the lighter side, especially for a hazy. Carbonation is pretty high. Thankfully only a touch of sweetness. Bitterness lingers and makes for a dry aftertaste, though not a dry beer at all. Ok, aftertaste is a little abrasive.

Drinkability is not great, but mostly because this is not my jam.

Appearance turned out poor, zero lacing.

I’m sure there are some people who might enjoy this, I can see some potential, but by the end of the glass it’s safe to say this missed the mark by a fair amount for me.

A: The beer is very murky brownish yellow in color. It poured with a quarter finger high off white head that consistently left a short head covering the surface and lots of lacing down the sides of the glass.
S: Moderate aromas of matcha tea are present in the nose along with notes of citrusy hops.
T: The taste follows the smell, except the hops are a bit stronger (imparting flavors of limes and gooseberries) and stand out in front of notes of the matcha tea. Hints of vanilla are noticeable in the finish.
M: It feels medium-bodied and a bit juicy on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: I liked the combination of matcha tea and the limes/gooseberries from the hops in this IPA.

Very different, and a bit off the beaten path for a NEIPA. Definitely, vanilla and green tea tasting.
Not my style- I’m into newer hops, west coast, Aussie and NZ hops for flavor. Worth checking out for a different craft beer experience.
