I decided to drink something lighter tonight before I called it a night. I am using a Pilsner glass and serving the beer at 44 degrees. The pour created a frothy, airy, three-fingered, light tan head with average retention. The somewhat slow dissipation left some lacing on the glass. The beer's color is SRM 32, dark brown with rich mahogany hues. The clarity is primarily opaque, with some light piercing the abyss. The appearance is above average for this style.
Nosing the glass, I first noticed dark roasted malts, char, floral blossoms, earthiness, and caramel. Smelling the glass again, I smell dark roasted coffee, dark chocolate, light molasses, bready, and lightly roasted barley. The beer has a lovely malty complex with light hop notes; I could not tell this was a low-ABV beer.
The first sip was dark roasted malts, char, light smoke, floral, herbal, earthiness, and toffee. Sipping the beer again, I taste caramel, dark roasted coffee, dark bittersweet chocolate, lightly roasted barley, and molasses. The beer has loads of dark, roasty notes and no harsh bitterness.
The mouthfeel is smooth, finishing dry. The body is medium-light and has medium carbonation.
This beer is fabulous. The Schwarzbier has big roasty malt flavor with minimal harshness. It does not taste like a low-ABV, full flavor, and delight to sip on this lovely Idaho evening.
