Looks like it’s silly season again and the Hype-Train™ is back with a heap of awesome new Aussie DIPAs heading our way “woot woot!”. First up it’s the next in the “I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead Dammit, Open Those Blinds Already Young Whipper-Snappers!” series with: Ballistic Sleep When You're Dead Double IPA. The series started out well with the India Brown Ale (which I drank a 4-pack of and forgot to review it – good sign there) before taking a turn into to meh territory with the New England IPA (which was definitely an over-hyped brew). Now here we are, with a classic West-Coast American Double IPA. TBH I do quite enjoy all the new styles and mishmashes coming out these days but nothing beats a top-notch classic DIPA.
Poured from a 375ml can into a nonic pint.
A: First up marketing is on-point: this is a good looking can label. The beer itself presents a clear golden body with a nice white head that sticks around well given the 8.3% ABV, and has decent lace stripes inside the glass, top effort. 9/10.
S: Piney/green/almost cannabis upfront on the nose, grapefruit and juicy fruit rounds out this lip-smacking DIPA aroma, this is going to go down a real treat! Touch of dry cracker and pepper in the background. Damn, can’t wait to have a gulp… I mean a measured sip… *Mr. Burns voice* yes, yes that will do. 9/10.
T: Fork me! This is a tasty tasty drop. Flavour profile starts out: green hop tea, pine needles, grassy/resin character, morphs into a grapefruit/juicy fruit centre, then that dry cracker malt base and cuts through some of those viscous hop resins and leads on to a grassy medium bitterness in the finish. Touch of rubber too that I’ve noticed in a few really fresh IPAs, you can let it sit longer in the fridge and that note will fade over time (along with the hops regrettably – it’s a tough balance to strike). Ballistic nailed it, but there are a couple things: the 8.3% ABV registers just a tad here, if anything it’s possibly a too hop syrupy… impressive DIPA otherwise. 9/10.
M: Medium bodied, hop oils rolling all over the palate, and a super-dense almost non-existent carbonation rounds it out: solid. 8/10.
D: BAM! Out of the gates like a whip-crack this Ballistic DIPA. One of the more impressive DIPAs I’ve had in recent memory and it certainly beats Hop Nation’s The Dawn for me – though I am a crusted-on West-Coast DIPA drinker, so I do appreciate an aggressive hop profile (and any beer style that contains the letters “IPA” in some form). Ballistic’s Pale x Awesomeness = SWYD DIPA. 9/10.
Food match: A brew like this deserves luscious smoked meats (aka Hipster-Food).
