I picked this up at Saltfire last month; they are one of my favorite breweries in Salt Lake. I am using a tulip glass and serving the beer at 44 degrees. The pour created a frothy, airy, one-fingered, white head with poor retention. The quick dissipation left no lacing on the glass. The beer's color is amber-yellow with light straw hues charting at SRM 6, and the clarity is mostly clear. The beer's appearance is average for this style; I was not expecting the beer to dissipate so quickly.
Nosing the glass, I smell honey, grape juice, light funk, vinous, subtle barnyard, fresh air, lightly toasted malts, and wood. Smelling the beer again, I notice floral, light herbal, and earthiness. The beer has a lot of grapes and wine aromas coupled with a funkiness of wild ales.
Sipping beer, grapes, and wine are dominant flavors, with flavors of lightly toasted malts, wild yeast, barnyard, and honey. Sipping the beer again, I detect a light breadiness, malty sweetness, fresh air, grape skins, and floral and light herbal notes.
The body is medium-light and has medium carbonation. The mouthfeel is tarty and finishes with a light bitterness.
I was unsure of what to expect from Saltfire, considering they do IPA well. This beer has many grape and wine flavors combined with a wild ale. The grapes are more prominent than I prefer in a beer. It is a solid Wild Ale and a lovely sipper, although I would like a heavier beer on this cold night.
