I am taking a brief pause in the last beer in the Vertical and trying this on tap from SaltFire. I have followed the brewery since its inception. I was served the beer at Saltfire tap room, at 40 degrees in a Saltfire Pint glass; the pour created a foamy, half-fingered light tan head with above-average retention. The somewhat slow dissipation left bits of lacing on the glass and a 2mm foam layer on the liquid. The beer's color is dark brown, with mahogany-red hues, opaque, and charts at SRM 30. The beer's overall appearance is average for this style.
When the Server brought the beer over, I could smell the marshmallows, which reminded me of roasting them over a campfire. The subtle fire and smoke aromas set this porter apart from others I have tried. Nosing the glass, I noticed brown sugar, molasses, bready notes, chocolate, light-roasted coffee, and a slight wood note. This beer is not barrel-aged, but the character it adds is lovely. Nosing the beer again, I pick up raisins, caramel, toffee, and earthiness.
The beer has a strong marshmallow flavor, with notes of fire, char, and a touch of smoke. Sipping the beer again, I notice raisins, chocolate, light wood(but there is no wood), bready, molasses, caramel, toffee, light coffee, a hint of floral esters, and a touch of toffee.
The mouthfeel is light, with a subtle astringency and a clean finish. The carbonation is medium, and the body is medium-light.
Final Impression: The beer is unique; it has that toasted marshmallow note, and the base porter is enjoyable. As I am sipping this beer, the Server comes over and says it is made with Peeps. I can not taste any peeps in this beer, but the marshmallows are at the forefront of the palate. Interesting beer nonetheless, should try it.
