From the brewery:
"This Doppelbock was aged on poplar and persimmon wood giving it a slight dark fruit and toasted coconut notes. Silky chocolate flavor with a smooth, rich finish."
Now I've never been a fan of PC bullshit, but I have, for nearly 2 decades, railed against cheap puns in beer names. That goes double for sexual puns. Just.. these people are doing such a great job of making beer please don't make me thing of a businessowner's while I drink it. But, also, please Please PLEASE don't hire some marketing kid who tells you what to do. Just avoid cringey dad jokes.
But anyway, names don't matter that much. Let's pour it.
Hours-old crowler. Pour is great. Shockingly lively, for the style. Very dark and stouty but also super incredibly fizzy for its supposed ABV.
Aroma is... good, but not really placeable. There's a brightness and energy there, but it's not really anything I'd associate with a D-bock. Chocolate and hops. Kinda... kinda like one of them "black IPAs" that were weirdly popular around 2012.
Tastes good. More bocky. Still not to style. But good. Like a legit d-bock up front, then smoothed to the point of near-wateriness by fruity coconut milk nodes. I think that's what they were going for, and it does work. But this feels overall like they did a batch of a doppel that didn't work and then they added flair post-facto to save it. If they can make this a consistent product, I will be very impressed.
