Another old ass review from the Bistro's 9th annual double ipa festival held on February 7, 2009.
So we're gonna review one of the first (or THEE first?) craft breweries in Sacramento. Clocked in at 73 ibu. So old its not even on untappd.
Another amber colored double ipa. 1/3" off white head. Aroma of caramel and grapefruit rind and pine bitterness. Man, some of these ipa reviews from over 10 years ago are all just ibu crystal malt wars beers.
Requisite caramel malty notes and bitter pine and grapefruit rind continue to constitute the majority of what this beer is about, but with a heady level of carbonation that kept it from getting sticky and as mundane as it could have felt mouth feel wise. Hid the alcohol decently well.
When reading the notes 11 years+ later, its amazing to see a time period where aroma hops were virtually non existant, hazy stuff was far away, heck, even a dry west coast style finish wasn't here yet. But if you wanted a 30% crystal malt high ibu cruiser, this was a time to be alive.

Consumed 01/29/09 at Blue Palms, Hollywood, CA.
Very clear. Deep amber/coppery hued beer with a thin skin of off-white foam.
Aroma is strong, piney hops.
Flavor follows aroma - hops are prominent and forward: piney and a little spicy. Some caramel malt flavor, but not as much as I would have expected from a DIPA. Bitter on the finish, but not immediately. Drinks smaller than its ABV.
Well carbonated and a little oily on the tongue.
Not world-class, but then, how many beers have you had that are?

At the source
A - Pours golden with a hint of copper and a nice two fingered head. Moderately dissipates to one finger, and leaves light lacing.
S/T - Caramel, honey, flowers and pine.
M - Slightly thin, but well-balanced.
D - Good, I enjoy the malt profile that shines through in this beer. Many DIPAs forget about the malts and focus solely on the hops.
