I tried the Austral at the Platinum Club in Santiago. It poured a clear golden with white head that left some lace. The scent and taste were similar to others for this style of beer. The Mouthfeel is lighter in body with good carbonation. Overall it's ok.

I found this while cleaning out the back of the beer fridge. A friend brought it back from Chile a while back, so I might as well add another country to my reviews. Thanks AB! Here goes... Cerveza Austral's Patagona Pale Ale pours up with a modest effervescence that creates a lacy beige head that tops the superbly clear auburn body. This one was bottle conditioned! The aroma is quite malty with hints of crusty bread, toasted almonds & toffee bits. No hops, but malty! Hint of tartness. The flavor starts off rather heavy & cloying with lots of caramel sweetness followed by a defined grain/toast character, but some light bitterness creeps in toward the off-dry, slightly acidic finish. Medium-light body. Not bad at all! Reminiscent of a Scottish Heavy 70/-

Sampled in El Calafate, Argentina - just over the border from it´s origin in Chile.

Appearance - dark gold to brown with light carbonation and no significant head. Nothing special to report.

Aroma - fruity and sweet. Lemon zest and pineapples with a malty base.

Taste - Excellent. For a South American beer there is rare evidence of hops. Bitter notes underly a zesty, refreshing brew. I could drink this happily all day.

12 oz. bottle purchased in Chile as part of a four beer sampler pack. Given to me as a gift. Appears to be labelled with a bottling date: ELAB 160908.

A: Pours dark for a "Pale Ale" reddish almost nut brown. Small head with poor retention. Carbonation level looks right. Dark color and poor head is a little confusing for something labelled "Pale Ale" though I do not have much experience in Chilean beer either.

S: Rasins, figs, apples, and a bit of tootsie roll and slight nuttiness. Little to no discernable hops in the nose.

T: Somewhat sweet caramel malts pair with a mild fruity bitterness. Tastes a bit like apple. Not terribly complex, but significantly more bitter than the Cerveza Austral Lager. Some fruitiness is evident from the hops, though it does have an abnormally large malt backbone for a pale ale. A decent tasting ale, though perhaps mistakeable for a nut brown ale even. I will give a little leeway as this is not a bad brew.

M: Medium to light bodied with medium-high carbonation. Does not appear bottle conditioned, which was surprising since the lager did appear to be.

D: Not a bad brew overall but nothing I am interested in drinking multiple of. A bit sweet for a pale ale, though the hop freshness is questionable (bottle is from Chile after all). With so few reviews, I figure the more information the better, however. My experience with this brewery so far is that they make pretty well balanced, inoffensive beers.

App:
Cheap, bubbly head. Ruby and amber in color. Copper, with zero lacing or head/retention.

Nose:
Clean up front malt which fades into hoppy, dry alkaline bitterness.

Taste:
Interesting mouthfeel, low carbonation, malt fades into hops.

Notes:
Had this one at an underground Taberna Pub in Tierra Del Fuego.
