From a growler into an oversized tulip.
Gorgeous looking brew. Frothy khaki-colored head resembling a root beer float and lacing occurring in streaks, patches and everything between. The body is pitch-black but with trickles of carbonation visible. It's begging to be drank. 5
Holy shite. Man, it's been a while since I've had a black IPA but I can't think of one touching this level of fruitiness. The black body doesn't lead one to expect the mango, melon and orange creamsicle explosion that emanates from this beer. Phenomenal on its own but there's more going on here. Piney and spicy hop bite. Resin. Dark roasted malts. 4.75
The nose lead me to believe I was going to get a big juicy fruit bomb flavor, but I'm again thrown for a loop by the dark roast flavor and bitterness that's more akin to a foreign export stout. Then melon and orange and grapefruit slowly creep in and veer things in another direction, then comes some dank and resinous flavor accompanied by some sweet creamy vanilla flavor. The finish lingers with a bit of roasted and faintly chocolate malt as well as citrusy zest. 4.5
My initial reaction to the first sip was to think the beer thin, which it really is not. I think my brain was still in stout-mode maybe. This IS lighter-bodied, but in way that can be appreciated for maintaining the refreshing drinkability and almost thirst-quenching profile of this beer. It's potently bitter and will assault the tongue but it's the type of assault that reminds you why you got into IPAs to begin with as opposed to the assault that makes you want to revert to drinking doppelbocks everyday. One last thing I'd be remiss to say is the lighter body and spritely carbonation here play exceptionally well together. 4.25
This beer is awesome. Makes me want to thumb my nose at all the purists and say Black IPAs or Cascadian Dark Ales are my favorite beers. Maybe I will.
