A limited release in collaboration with Jubilation, this beer is barrel-aged in Buffalo Trace barrels previously used to barrel-age Bosque's Scotia Limited.
Black Velvet. Meant to be savored under the cover of a winter night. Jet Black Winter, a chewy Russian Imperial Stout, was aged in bourbon barrels for one year and plumbs the depth of chocolate and molasses flavors, while maintaining undertones of caramel. The hop character has mellowed over time and provides a delicate balance in flavor and aroma. this malty beast hits on all levels and will satisfy your every craving.

Plum-tinted black with a finger of soupy-looking mocha-colored head that's quick to dissipate but leaves decent lacing. Strong bourbon aroma with faint vanilla and oak notes, and then dark malts behind, hinting at molasses and a little char.
The very heavy, creamy, smooth mouthfeel is what stands out first upon sipping -- it's what I imagine drinking mercury is like. The taste is similar to nose, but with a lot more depth. There's moderately-strong bourbon up front, a little roasted/charred malt behind, which over time gives way to a definite tobacco, some sweet stone fruit, leather, baker's chocolate and a relatively strong hop bitterness in the aftertaste.
This isn't one of those creamy, milk-chocolate-and-vanilla BBA stouts. It took me a while to get used to the bitterness and tobacco, but there's a very complex and enjoyable malt profile here if you take the time to sit with it. Very solid.

Pours black with a nice mocha head. Getting a ton of anise in the aroma as well as roast, leather, and a hint of some chocolate with some bourbon along for the ride. Flavor followed suit. Definitely some bitterness here. A fuller bodied mouthfeel. Overall, not a fan of anise so not a fan of this one.

To bad for this beer that I had just had a Backwoods Bastard from Founders prior to trying this bourbon barrel aged stout, not that there is anything wrong with this beer, it has a great look in the glass and the aroma and taste were decent but a bit light on the bourbon.

Bomber poured into an oversized cognac glass.
Jet Black Winter is apropos given the appearance. You'll feel north of Northfell staring into this beer too long. Creamy oatmeal head looks more like it should be the froth on a coffee shake. The contrast of body and head is perfectly stark and captivates the eye. If you're like me, you may want to take this beer into the champagne room. 5
I was getting bourbon spice in my nostrils as I poured this and I was worried the smell was going to be a bourbon barrel runaway train. It's not. A pass of the nose over my glass gets all dark chocolate and vanilla notes. Tobacco. Leather. Las Vegas hotel room minus the lipstick, ashtray and gonorrhea.Oatmeal cookie with some bourbon drizzled over it by that lush of a grandmother that now has amnesia. 4.5
Assertive bitterness is the first thing to hit you with that initial sip. And it will continue. Welcome to marriage! Pretty much, right? And just like marriage, that bitterness turns to bourbon/whiskey flavors, tobacco, and whores. Well, not the whores, but there's this oak and leather flavor that persists. . Sweet vanilla notes will linger here, but don't expect that shit from marriage. Deeper exploration into the beer reveals hidden caramel and oatmeal cookie flavors. I'd say give this beer more time than a shitty marriage; this one actually gets better. 4.25
That bitterness might mess with you. Keep drinking. It'll recede and a smoother, lighter-side-of-medium-bodied body will endear itself to you. Think: You fall in love with the hot but vicious and angry chick with the gorgeous body, but eventually realize the soft-spoken, gentle, slim-profiled gal is the better look. That's this beer's mouthfeel. 4.25
I won't hammer any more parallels between this beer and marriage into your overburdened skull. Let's focus on the beer for one second: it's good.
