What do you get when you combine old-school smoked malt and coffee in an imperial stout?

Naturally, something quite unique. Tuhkakuppi is the ideal breakfast beer, inspired by the timeless combination of coffee and cigarettes. Full, intense aromas of smoked malt give an almost-whiskey-like nose to this special libation. Upon further review, given time to open up, the beer's somewhat sweet, bready, toffee-and-pretzel-like undertones create an unmatched symbiosis, allowing the intense aromas of coffee to come forth and shine.

The coffee blend tantalizes the senses, as the flavors gradually fade from strong, espresso-like notes, towards a softer nuttiness and sweetness. The body lingers significantly on the palate, making this an ideal sipping stout while reading the morning paper, or after a far-too-long day at work.

Copenhagen 30/5 2025. 44 cl can from Meny, Illums, Kbh. K. Close up of a fellow enjoying a very smoky mug of coffee on the can.

Pours opaque dark brown with a big dark beige head. Stable. Settles as a 0,5 cm thick layer of foam obscuring the surface of the beer. Crawling up the sides of the glass. Substantial lacing.

Aroma is intense with a sweet and roasted odor of dark malts mingling with hints of smoke and earthy fumes. Coffee and brown sugar. Lightly smoked malts. Dark alcohol looming.

Light carbonation. Rather thick, oily. soft, smooth, light tingling texture.

Flavor is intense with a medium strong sweetness followed and balanced by a medium strong sourish bitterness. Aftertaste is bitter with a notable and pleasant sweet undertone. Lingering. Finish is quite dry.

Quite the Breakfast beer.
