Appearance: Pours a dark, brown barely clear color with a massive light tan head. SRM of 22. (4.00)
Aroma: Strong aromas of dark grains, black bread, cocoa and dry chocolate. (4.25)
Flavor: Moderate flavors of dark grains, chocolate, some faint grain malts. Caramel and nuttiness as it warms. Flavorful. (4.00)
Feel: Medium-bodied, lower carbonation, slightly flat. Clean. (3.50)
Compared to Hofbrau Dunkel 3/2023: Pours darker, stronger head. Stronger aromas. More chocolate, roast, dark grains. Less earthy honey and caramel. More flavor overall and dryer and cleaner. Winner: 608
Compared to Ayinger Ayinger Altbairisch Dunkel 3/2023: Pours darker, similar head, stronger aromas. More chocolate, roast. Less German yeast, floral hops, dark grains. Sweeter, but Ayinger is more traditional. Winner: Ayinger.
Overall: A decent to better than average representation of a German Dunkel. Better than Hofbrau for what it's worth. Almost leans toward a Schwarzbier with the roast and chocolate here. Nice dark grains and chocolatey notes. Some earthy caramel and nuts too. A little flat is the only criticism. Otherwise, nice flavors without being too sweet. (Rating: 4.01)
