SummerSummer
Notes: This series of four herbal beers is dedicated to the seasons. Each beer stands for a particular season, so you can drink your way through the year. In summer, we foraged wormwood, which lend the beer its citrusy aroma and bitterness. This blend matured on average 10 months in red wine barrels.

Pours a slightly cloudy, pale golden amber coloration with no head. Smells of light wheaty malt and a disctinct herbal/floral aroma that I can only attribute to the wormwood here, with some citrus notes and hints of musty oak coming through as well. Taste is a great balance of light wheaty malt, a distinct, herbal, bitter and slightly floral wormwood character and a strong, zesty citrus presence, some lighter, fruity esters with notes of green apple and gooseberry, as well as hints of musty, very slightly tannic oak. Finishes dry, tart and bitter, with some wormwood, citrus and hints of oak lingering in the aftertaste. Flat mouthfeel with a light/medium body and no carbonation.

This is certainly another very creative and interesting beer from Kemker that fits the season perfectly with its very citrussy, herbal, dry, tart and bitter flavor profile, making for quite a refreshing and thirst-quenching brew. While it's not quite as rich and deep as some other Kemker Gruits, this very much fits the summer theme, but I would still have wished for a little more complexity, with the bitter wormwood and zesty citrus notes, reminiscent of lemon verbena, being quite dominant here. While it makes this feel a little one-dimensional, although these do go together very well, the biggest problem with it is the total lack of carbonation, especially for a summer beer like this. At the end of the day, this isn't that much of a big deal though and overall this still makes for a very unique and refreshing summer Gruit that is rather enjoyable.
