Inspired by European bitter liquors and gruit culture we brewed this botanical beer with a gripping interplay of bitterness and sourness. Gentian root gives the beer its distinctive character and is rounded out with hogweed, lemon verbena and bog myrtle. Aged in red wine barrels for an average of 19 months. Blend 2022 is tamer than the former batch.

Pours a cloudy, deep golden amber coloration with a large, fluffy head. Smells of doughy malt and strong herbal aromas of bog myrtle and lemon verbena, with hints of tannic oak and mild funk coming through as well. Taste is an excellent balance of doughy malt and strong herbal notes of bog myrtle, with that typical, light anise character, lemon verbena, with a certain citrus zest note and gentian root, bringing a distinct bitterness to the table, as well as quite tannic oak and subtle, musty funk. Finishes with a medium sourness, medium/strong bitterness and some strong herbal notes and tannic oak lingering in the aftertaste. Smooth mouthfeel with a medium body and carbonation.
I haven't had anything from Kemker in a while and this brew really made me realize how much I missed their stuff. A fantastic barrel-aged Gruit with intense and vibrant herbal notes and a great balance of bitterness and sourness, with that tannic oak and subtle funk working quite well with the flavor profile here and really enhancing the drinking experience. Such a fragrant aroma of bog myrtle and lemon verbena to this as well, that just makes you want to keep smelling this beer before every sip.
