Had on-tap at Burning Barrel Brewing in Rancho Cordova, CA
Appearance - Served up 13oz into a snifter opaque and deep violet in color with a mostly barren surface and a razor thin ring around the edge of the glass. About a dozen or so spots make up the lacing.
Smell - Sweet, tangy boysenberry aroma, with lesser vanilla, cinnamon and a crust-like malt undertone.
Taste - Dominant boysenberry taste, which kicks with plenty of tart and sweet qualities. Lesser cinnamon follows quickly, and then notes of vanilla add to a light, toasty malt undertone, leaving a crust-like impression. Finish is still boysenberry dominant, though the sweetness fades faster, along with the cinnamon and vanilla, leaving a mostly tart berry aftertaste.
Mouthfeel - Light-to-medium in body with spritzy carbonation. Slick, easy drinker with a crisp, dry finish.
Overall - A slight improvement over their first 'Oven' offering, the peach. The 'pie crust' elements are more at play here, and I like boysenberry more than I do peach. It was a bit rich when it was first tapped, but two weeks of age has taken bit of the edge off and has allowed it to round out beautifully.
