Had on-tap at Burning Barrel Brewing in Rancho Cordova, CA
Appearance - Served up 10.5 oz into a tulip, black with cola brown edging where the light can penetrate. Mostly barren surface with a thin ring of suds around the edges. No lacing, but none expected.
Smell - Bourbony sweetness, oak and vanilla, maple, faint cinnamon.
Taste - Complex and perplexing. Maple. Tobacco leaf & oak. Hints of cinnamon that ride beneath, but pop here and there. Vanilla. Raisin. Strong bourbon sweetness. And yet I can't shake the taste of eucalyptus which some of these notes combine to give the impression of, though this lessens as it warms and the flavors begin to separate. Balanced finish, with lingering sweet and slightly sour bourbon notes in the aftertaste.
Mouthfeel - Medium bodies with low carbonation. Smooth, easy drinker with a slightly dry finish. Dangerously smooth for 12%.
Overall - In many ways, this is a classic barrel aged stout, and yet it adds some new school notes in there with the cinnamon. There's certainly a change in the profile as it reaches room temp, with all the flavors finding their own footing. Its an odd, interesting brew, but it works.
