Dark, clear brown pour, appears as an opaque dark brown, nearly black, in the glass; highly carbonated, producing huge frothy and sudsy head, light khaki in color, spidery fingers of foam lace the glass. Pleasant scent; mocha with a touch of hardwood smokiness; roasted nuts. The taste pickups on the smell; chocolate and cocoa; a sense of grain char; deft touch of smokiness on top; very slight booziness component; light phenol bitterness. Medium-bodied; a bit weak feel overall.
One of 11 500ml bottles I grabbed close to the permanent close of Burns Family Artisan Ales. Overall, I like this porter. This kind of beer definitely improves with a bit of 'openness and warming'. The looks (once the head settles down), smell, and taste are really good. The mouthfeel is initially rather weak and loose (likely due to overactive carbonation), but as the excess carbonation reduces its presence, the beer comes across more solid in the mouthfeel department. Overall, a fine, well-rounded smoked beer.
ABV: 9.5%; pouring temperature: 49.9 °F; bottling info: 2023
