Pours a dark reddish brown with some fine, soapy head.

Smell is malty and roasty with notes of grain, coffee, dark chocolate and hints of licorice and raisins.

Taste is roasty and slightly herbal, with notes of very dark chocolate, coffee, salt licorice and a slight woodiness. Mild bitterness and a fruity finish.

Mouthfeel is medium, creamy and well carbonated.

Overall, a very nice beer. I don't know how this stands up to other Knupps, but as a porter/dubbel kind of thing it's very tasty!

Many thanks to Snowcrash000 for this beer!

A - Dark burgundy brown pour with bubbly creamy caramel colored foaming laying across the top.

S - Soft smokey char, baker's chocolate, cream, and some roasted cocoa.

T - Follows the nose: smokey char, chocolate, some charcoal, baker's chocolate, and cream dominate the beer from start to finish.

M - Thick and a little chewy.

O - This beer is nicely done. A recommended try.

Pours a dark brown to black color with a beige, spongy big head.

Smells of whole grain bread, toffee, bakers chocolate and a light, herbal hop note.

Has a creamy mouthfeel among a medium bodied beer, providing just enough carbonation to add a refreshing hint to the silkness.

Tastes of toffee enriched bakers chocolate with a rustic whole grain bread edge to it, tied together by a world class smooth mouthfeel. Turns heavier on the chocolate then with a hint of caramel backing it up, with a dry hop note coming up, toning down the sweetness. Finishes with a lively carbonation, more earthy, bitter chocolate with a caramel peak, making the aftertaste ranging between sweet and dry.

This is a truly tasty Knupp, ranging between a Dunkel and a porter, amped up by a dry hop flavor, creating a diverse taste profile.

Pours a pitch black coloration with a medium, creamy head. Smell is a little subdued, with faint notes of roasted malt, coffee, licorice and herbal hops coming through. Taste follows the nose, but is a lot more intense, with strong notes of roasted malt, licorice and coffee, as well as lighter chocolate and a slight earthy/herbal note. Finishes with a medium bitterness and more licorice coming through in the aftertaste. Smooth, velvety mouthfeel with a medium body and carbonation.

This is a Cologne "Knupp", the largely forgotten dark cousin of Kölsch that was actually outlawed in the 18th century, a bottom-fermented style with strong roasted/licorice notes. Great example of the style, as far as I can tell. I'll have this over Kölsch any day of the week for sure! There's just a great balance to this, with a good depth of flavor and complexity, while remaining quite easily drinkable at the same time. Very aptly named indeed.
