An old homebrew favorite, SMaSH Bandicoot is a flavor packed, Session Amber ale. For this beer, we decided to go with bold expression through simple means. SMaSH stands for Single Malt and Single Hop, and we chose to pair Idaho 7 hop with Red X malt. The Red X lends a unique, malty sweet backbone which is complemented by the zippy orange flavor and aroma of Idaho 7. Easy drinking and refreshing!

A: Pours an almost opaque yet still clear dark reddish amber in color with moderate amounts of active visible carbonation rising along the edges of the glass and moderate ruby red + mahogany + dark golden yellow colored highlights. The beer has a two finger tall sudsy foamy beige head that reduces to a large patch of thin film covering approximately 90% of the surface of the beer and a thin ring at the edges of the glass. Light amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Slightly stronger than moderate aromas of bready + toasted + caramel malts with a light to moderate amount of caramel sweetness. Light aromas of citrus/orange + citrus/orange pith + citrus/orange zest hops.

T: Upfront there are slightly stronger than moderate aromas of bready + toasted + caramel malts with a light to moderate amount of caramel sweetness. That is followed by light flavors of citrus/orange + citrus/orange pith + citrus/orange zest hops which impart a light amount of bitterness which lingers slightly then fades away leaving a relatively clean finish.

M: Just shy of medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Smooth with a relatively clean finish.

O: Drinks pretty easily with well hidden alcohol and a clean + smooth mouthfeel. Enjoyable and it does a nice job of highlighting both the Red X malt and the Idaho 7 hop - don’t come across a ton of amber ales anymore but this one is pretty good and worth a try.
