Had this one on tap at Carlyle Brewing on 10/11/2008.
A= This ale poured a cloudy brown color with the slightest hint of amber around the edges. The head started small at 1/2" and dropped to almost nothing very quickly. Nice layers of lace down the glass.
S= I was surprised by the smell of this
"American Strong Ale" as I was expecting a little more spicy hop presence. The aroma was good though, dominated by malty sweetness and caramel, followed by ripe fruit and earthy hops.
T= I found this beer to start off very sweet, with bakery malts, orchard fruit, caramel, and raisins. The middle dried just enough to let the earthy (fuggles I hear) hops come out. Finish was back to rich sweetness with the alcohol well hidden.
MF= Surprisingly heavy bodied, with a slick oily mouthfeel. Carbonation was soft but present enough to cut the heaviness quite a bit.
D= This was a very pleasant surprise as this beer was pretty good yet it didn't meet any of my experience or preconceived notions of the style. The ABV is almost undetectable making this one dangerous to those caught unaware!

Draught @ brewpub: Served in a goblet. this one pours a cloudy brown, with a very small off-white head. it still managed to leave quite a bit of lacing. The aroma is nice. Nothing really jumping out front, but there are notes of caramel, malt, spices, and grapefruit and earthy hops. The taste is also quite good. It is smooth and well balanced. It is slightly sweet with a bitter finish. Malts, earthiness, spiciness and fruits way in the back.

Pour was lighter ruby/brown in color with a small off-white head. Smell was quite fruity, but not strong enough. Taste was nice though, quite fruity, with some nice malty notes and little bit of herbs and hops. Mouthfeel was a little undercarbonated, even for the tap, and a little sticky as well. Overall not bad, but certainly not a marathon brew.
I also had the same beer aged in bourbon barrels. The color was full on ruby and had better head retention. The smell was much stronger, but totally overidden by bourbon. The taste was also about the same, but like it had 2 shots of Jim Beam in it. Drinkability was low on this one. It was worth a try though.
