A Cascadian dark (black IPA) made with a Belgian yeast. The malts establish a smooth roast-and-chocolate foundation, to which the hops overlay an herbal-floral dimension. ABV about 7.4%.

375 ml capped bottle, purchased at the brewery

pours a very dark brown, almost black, with very thick tan colored head. head is rocky and forms mounds above the glass rim, pretty impressive looking. Excellent head retention as I drink the beer. Wonderful mix of big earthy hop aroma and mild roastiness. Similar taste, dry, bitter finish. Everything works well together for a flavorful enjoyable beer. Medium bodied, slick feel.

Unknown bottle age poured into a pint glass. Gorgeous nearly opaque black color with a clean pour and one of the best heads I have ever seen. Three finger, VERY good retention and soapy lacing. I still had about half an inch of head even after finishing the glass, and it was very pleasant. The mouthfeel is nice and crisp and dry for a dark ale, as is expected for this style. The nose is reminiscent of roasted malt with a NW hop snap. The taste is hop and citrus front melding into sweet chocolate, coffee, and roasted hazelnuts, with a crisp yet soft finish.

This beer somehow gets at the best of a American Pale and the best of a good Porter, perhaps similar to a Dopplebock yet distinctly different, and marries them both. This is an exceptional beer I can't wait to get my hands on again.
