Collaboration with Docks Beers
A collaboration brew with Docks Beers inspired by the style used to quench the thirst of the British in India in the 1800s.
Leading aromas of resinous citrus & berry fruit complemented by robust, undertones of chocolate and liquorice. Hop aromas are backed up by lightly roasted malt character and balanced bitterness.

Copenhagen 19/8 2021. 44 cl can from Meny, Vermlandsgade, Kbh. S. Yellow can in Salt’s usual beehive design.
Pours opaque dark brown with a huge beige head. Settles as 3 cm thick frothy layer of foam covering the surface of the beer. Crawling up the sides of the glass. Substantial lacing.
Aroma is fairly intense with a sweet, roasted dark odor mingling with citric scents. Dark roasted malts with hints of chocolate. Citrus and lime.
Light carbonation. Slightly thick , oily, soft, smooth, lightly tingling texture.
Flavor is medium intense with a medium strong sweetness followed by a slightly more moderate citric bitterness. Aftertaste is bitter with a sweet undertone. Lingers for a while.
Not unlike a Black IPA with its combination of sweet roastiness and citric bitterness. Pleasant drink nonetheless.

I haven't read the can or tasting notes for this as I want to blind taste it. All I know is it's brewer/name/style/ABV%. Now re: it's name I'm wondering what 'East India Porter' might suggest... hmm! Though on opening the can I immediately got a blast of NEIPA style bright hops!
L- It's black, and has poured with a 2mm dark tan head.
S- Bold citrus, with perhaps grapefruit the most prominent note.
T- Dry, citrus though not as intensely citrus as anticipated and then prominent smoke leaving a lingering charred/smoke/(+ grapefruit!) taste on my palate.
F- The NEIPA-like citrus brings brightness that even 6.6% can't hope to balance. So on balance it feels notably dryer than you might expect of a 6.6% porter.
O- Well, it's certainly different!! I had thought the yellow hexagon pattern on the lable suggested honey was an ingredient, well if so I can't register it! In summary, to me it has more in common with a NEIPA than a porter. Interesting to try but a way too far away from my more trad tastes to buy again.
440ml can BB: 14/Dec/2021 Bought from TremblingMadness/York as part of a large pick-your own consignment to London.
Review+rating done, I'll now read the can for any clues! 'resinous citrus', 'berry-fruit, chocolate, liquorice' Hops = Simcoe, Citra, Centennial etc.

We love reviews (150 characters or more)! Check out: How to Review a Beer. You don't need to get fancy. Drop some thoughts on the beer's attributes (look, smell, taste, feel) plus your overall impression. Something that backs up your rating and helps others. Thanks!
