Workhorse Brewing Co. "Imperial Red Ale"
$3 / 4 oz. at the brewery on 3 November 2018
This was the last beer I tried at Workhorse on my first visit. It wasn't even on my radar because I was interested in their main beers which seem to be mostly German in origin, but several people at the bar were disrespecting it and so I had to find out for myself.
Well, it wasn't "like drinking cheap whiskey" for sure. Neither was it a mind-blowing Imperial red as it was fairly mainstream and somewhat understated as all of their beers seem to be. It had a nice appearance with a clear dark copper colored body beneath a frothy-then-creamy cap. There wasn't a lot of hops in the aroma, but it was citrusy and the median caramelish malt came through nicely. I thought it was OK, but a little more (if there is any at all) dry-hopping would have been nice. The flavor followed the aroma in that the pilsner/caramel malt base was pleasant and spot on, but the hops could have been stronger. Still, it was nicely balanced as it was. I'd personally like to see them amp up both the malt and the hops, but that doesn't seem to be what they're going for. With that said however, I ask, why bother with an Imperial red ale? Why not stick to Pilsner, Helles, Märzen, and Vienna Lager? Well, apparently this is the brewer's favorite beer so I'm not sure what's going on there. My guess is they're really just working out their basics. Or, given their huge size, maybe these are all the first brews out of the gate? It wasn't too bitter, which was nice, and overall it was very nicely polished and rounded, it just lacked depth. Hmmmm, so what can I say? I'll take it or leave it. But I will say this, they're new and still working things out. I see great promise in what they're doing, and I expect that they'll get things dialed in soon enough.
