This Traditional West Coast Style IPA takes things back to basics without sacrificing the traditional, bold, hop-forward attributes of a West Coast IPA. No crazy frills or additions, Back To Basics uses Citra, Simcoe, and Centennial hops to provide a refreshingly piney flavor backed with aromas of stone fruit and grapefruit.

Workhorse Brewing Co. "Back To Basics"
16 fl. oz. can, "CANNED ON 02.08.23 09:25 542 MADE RIGHT"
$2 @ Weis, Conshohocken, PA

Notes via stream of consciousness: This is a traditional West Coast style IPA at 7.5% ABV. It's poured a very hazy body which isn't exactly traditional but whatever. It's golden in color beneath a finger's width of white foam. The aroma is citrusy and floral over a sweetish and bready malt base. The flavor follows with more intensity, and a little bit more character. The malt remains the same but I'm picking up some additional fruity notes from the hops. There's some orange, grapefruit, lemon, pine, and a bit of earthiness. A firm bitterness balances it perfectly, and it's sweetish upfront, citrusy across the middle, and then dry in the finish with a smear of citrus fruit, pine, and a dull earthiness lingering. In the mouth it's medium bodied on the upper end, and crisp-then-smooth across the palate. The carbonation seems almost natural with very fine bubbles rising slowly within. The head has held up remarkably well given that I've been called away from writing this several times and I still have a completely solid and creamy surface covering left after about 30 minutes and having drank half of it. The lacing could be better but it's still decent looking like tall trees rising up to the clouds on an island in the Pacific. Maybe it's because I'm old school myself but this one seems really well done to me. It has a great balance that leaves it remarkably drinkable, and although there aren't any crazy hops in it what's there knocks it out of the park.

From a 16oz can dated 2/8/23 into a 20oz "pint" glass. Can message: "Made Right"

Pours a slightly hazy brownish, yellowish orange with about one finger of white head. Excellent retention and lacing.

This beer smells wonderful. Citrus rind, grapefruit, oranges, grass, pine and earth.

Taste is strong as well but not as well-defined as the nose. Piney bitterness, citrus rind with slight sweet maltiness and alcohol on the back end of the sip.

Slightly sticky, medium to full-bodied mouthfeel. Sweet, dry-ish finish. Medium carbonation.

This has everything you'd expect in a malty WCIPA. Very nice representation of the style.
