A light, chestnut head starts out one inch and rocky, then transforms through pancake batter, ultimately ending up one-half inch of fine cream. The beer itself is black with dark cola highlights (SRM 36-40). A fine veil of lace coats the wall of a Pretentious Beer Glass Company Imperial Snifter.
Alcohol is quite strong and tries to camouflage deep roasted chocolate. This has a smell similar to sweet Irish Crème. Sweet roasted coffee comes out with significant warmth.
The flavor is deep roasted malt that verges on burnt. Surprisingly, there is very little sweetness, as the bitter roast takes control. Black coffee and bakers' chocolate dominate. The long finish is equally strong and a bit harsh. There is a light sense of chocolate sprinkles in the background, particularly after it warms.
A full body with the texture of soft wool. Despite the aroma, alcohol is below expectations. Carbonation is light.
This drinks like an old school American Stout. It is just an enjoyable and unassuming beer. I can imagine having one while playing softball with friends.
