We borrow from the old German recipes, bringing in a significant dose of Beechwood-smoked ("rauch") malt, then pile on the specially-made malts to further enhance the sweet rich character that is expected with a Lenten Bock. Full-bodied, with sweet chocolate and caramelized pralines, a hint of dried plum, and a wash of rich Bavarian lager yeast to make you say "ahhhh." Get caught up with your sense of Gemütlichkeit, settle in with an intensely rewarding brown-red lager as the weather slowly turns from chilly to less-chilly.

Tall, unlabeled can purchased locally. Pours a cola brown-black with a nice, tannish head. Apologies to the brewery for a horribly unclean glass - it would look so much better at the brewery, as it always does. Nice whiff of smoked wood over a bit of malty sweetness there. Maybe a touch too sweet, but the sweetness overall is balanced out by the smoked flavor. As always, Bookhouse delivers on the classic European styles.
It's just hard to rate these kinds of beers given the dog and pony show of the IPA-stout continuum holding us hostage.

A mahogany body is topped by a thick espresso foam head that settles to an immensely persistent blanket. I mean, we're talking head retention extraordinaire.
Taste is up there with the classics too. It's not too hammy, and certainly not an ash tray, instead exhibiting a good balance of sweet, almost applewoody smoked malt that hits the mark surprisingly well.
This come from behind stunner was my favorite beer during this thoroughly enjoyable first visit.
