Beautifully acorn red to dark varnished brown with a moderate khaki head that retains as a thin blanket and a firm quarter pipe ridge.
While a little light in body, taste is spot on style while barrel lightly tamps down the Belgian characteristics and adds caramels, vanillas and charred ginger snap, all while not being boozy.
An excellent pairing to this cold, wet winter evening, the medium-light body seems to add heft as the session goes on via its soft, mildly fluffy carbonation that comes to a tingly, semi-dry finish.
It actually reminds me quite a bit of Westvelteren XII, but with a little more bitterness and obviously a more oaky presence, albeit softly damp and whiskey tinged, again bringing up caramels, dulce de leche and a hint of pepper. As it warms, I begin to detect in the exhale a sort of soufflé sauce flavor, as well as hints of pumpernickel and bing cherry.
I should have bought more bottles!
