Poured from 500mL bottle into my Belvárosi sörfesztivál tulip. Best by 2/15/25.
Appearance: rich, cloudy dark-brown hue with a finger of frothy dark-tan foam atop. Porter-ey!
Smell: not nearly as porter-ey as the appearance! There's a hint of roasted malt in the mix, but man, this thing is sweet and black cherry all the way down. It reminds me of Thomas Kemper black cherry soda from back in the day. Note that this is not a complaint!
Taste: nothing in the ingredient list suggests this is back-sweetened, but damn, even for a cherry beer this thing is damn sweet. There's a little bit of acid for balance, though, and the roasted malt adds a bit of character. I know it's crazy for me to say this, but I think this beer could do with a hair less cherry and a hair more roasty. That said ... I love me a cherry beer, so I still like this brew.
Mouthfeel: medium body with a moderate carbonation and a rather smooth creaminess. I like it.
Overall: this is the insane part, where I am about to give a cherry beer a not-so-perfect grade. I think this beer is too sweet for what it is, and could be better balanced with more roast. Still good, but not my favorite cherry beer.
