This is one of 11 releases of barrel aged Imperial Russian Stout. One brew, split into 11 different casks and left to develop and absorb the character and flavour embedded in the wood. This one has been resting in a Glenrothes ex sherry butt. The whisky was vibrant, ripe with tropical fruits and gentle spice, with sweet, almondy sherry notes. It will develop over time but this is excellent to drink right now.

Pours an opaque, pitch-black coloration with a small, fizzy, quickly disappearing head. Smells of roasted, slightly caramelly malt, chocolate, coffee and dark/red fruits and berries, with notes of raisin, fig, blackcurrant and cranberry, as well as hints of peppery spice and Whisky-soaked oak. Taste is an excellent balance of roasted, slightly caramelly malt, milk chocolate, lighter coffee and strong notes of dark/red fruits/ berries and lighter spice, with notes of raisin, plum, fig, blackcurrant, cranberry, cherry and vanilla, licorice, black pepper, cardamon and clove, as well as some tobacco, leather and Whisky-soaked, musty oak. Finishes with a light sweetness and some chocolate, fruits and berries, spice and oak lingering in the aftertaste. Smooth mouthfeel with a rich body and light/medium carbonation.

This makes for a somewhat different but very enjoyable barrel-aged Russian Imperial Stout that clearly shows its Glenrothes heritage, which is aged in Sherry barrels, creating intense, vibrant notes of fruits, berries and spice, along with rich milk chocolate and roasted malt and coffee, finishing with a wonderfully warming, but not overly boozy Whiskey and oak presence. While there's very little bitterness to this, there's a very convincing balance of roasted and sweet notes going on here, with a rich and complex flavor profile of fruity, spicy and slighty woody and smokey accents. While mouthfeel could be fuller, this still makes for a very compelling, rich and complex brew that makes for a very enjoyable sipper.
