Brown color with light passing along the edges of the glass. Moderate head that leaves an initial thin layer of spots. Few spots left behind after that.

Smell: Deeply toasted dark bread (pumpernickel?) and relatively dry toffee. Faint alcohol and a barely perceptible bitter hop.

Taste: Highly carbonated with a predictably lower body (true to style). Lots of darker malts--chocolate and crystal. No black patent malt that I can tell. The finish is more semisweet chocolate than hoppy. Despite the spritziness, this is a smooth beer and very easy to drink.

I brought a tall boy can of this beer home from the brewery whilst there for my son's hockey showcase. It poured an opaque dark amber with off white head that is leaving a spotty lace. The scent had bold chocolate malt notes. The taste was nicely balanced and easy to drink with semi sweet dark chocolate malt base with smoove caramel and vanilla presence that finishes with a quick bittering hop bite. The mouthfeel was medium in body and had good carbonation. Overall it is a great beer.
