Found this in a Moscow supermarket. Standard brown half liter bottle with the cartoonish figure of a medieval messenger quaffing a beer. "Gonyets" means messenger, while "Barkhatnoye" best translates as mild. Ingredients conform to the purity law, and include four types of malt. The expiration date was 8/10/03, I bought it on 8/22/03, and opened it on 8/26/03. Oh well.
It poured a nice dark amber hue under a thin but firm reddish-tan head that lingered most of the way down the glass. I even noticed a trace of lace at the bottom. The nose is very strong, malt and caramel. The mouth is smooth and even, wiht just a touch of sour (expiration date!) and a touch of roastiness. The taste is very malty, but again with that touch of sourness. Still, it was good - smooth and satisfying. The finish brings out the dormant hoppy bitterness that lingers into the aftertaste. Quite a pleasant brew - I'll have to find some more of this stuff.
