The Russian word for hops is "khmel," so when I saw this in the store, the hophead in me got real excited. No such luck, as "khmelnoye" doesn't refer to hops content at all, but rather is meant to tell the customer that you can get drunk real easy with this brew. OK.
Standard brown half liter bottle with the usual Gonyets figure quaffing a beer. Rice and sugar are ingredients. Best before 10/16/03, I opened it on 8/27/03.
Poured a nice clear rich gold under a slightly off-white head that was thin and short-lived. The smell, to the extent there was one at all, was very light malt. The mouth was prickly, sweet and semi-heavy. The first taste is a little bit sweet, almost fruity. The typical bock malt flavor then kicks in, followed by a bit of a hoppy finish. The aftertaste was mainly the malt. Not a great beer, this is certainly drinkable.
