Man, I really liked this beer an I'm not a sour fan. My sister lives in Europe and brought me a bunch of EU craft beers for Xmas to try, thus was the best by far. A solid sour fruit, but not too tart, just enough hips and malt to round things out.

€4.10 @ Naïv, Frankfurt, DE

Notes via stream of consciousness: So this is a “Maracuja Sauer”. Maracuja is passion fruit. It’s brewed with wheat malt, barley malt, flaked oats, Maracuja purée (8%), hops, lactic acid bacteria, and Norwegian yeast. It’s poured a cloudy yellow-gold beneath a full head of bright white foam that’s taking some time to drop. The head is made up of both larger and smaller bubbles, and there are only a few streams of bubbles rising upwards within. The aroma is strongly of passion fruit over a sweetish malt base with just a touch of mineral character. It’s more sour than I thought it would be given the aroma, and it becomes very tart passion fruit with a background of sweetish malt. The fruitiness is pretty intense for being just 8%! I doubt there’s much bitterness to it, and I can’t detect any. In the mouth it’s light-medium in body and zesty due to the stark acidity. Looking back, the head eventually dropped to nothing, and no lacing was left behind, but that’s to be expected of a sour beer; the fact that it held its initial head for so long says something. This is without doubt the strongest flavored passion fruit beer I’ve ever had, and it’s really nicely balanced as well. For fans of fruity sour beers this is one to seek out.
