half-liter bottle purchased at Bahetle in Kazan, Russia. (The mysterious sugar ingredient is simply maltose syrup, which is not uncommon in beers here.)

A: Pours a deep copper gold with a persistent tan head that fades to very nice lace. After last night's pale yellow "amber" beer, this one is actually amber.

S: Hmm. This smells like an adjunct beer. Strongly so. Although the label doesn't indicate anything aside from water, malt, maltose, and hops. (Most labels omit the yeast, although that's clearly gotta be there, too.)

T: This *tastes* like an adjunct lager. And it tastes much lighter than the color. Methinks the maltose is a coloring agent. The initial sweetness is met by a strongly pinprick-like bitterness in the center and finish. The aftertaste is BMC.

M: Adjunct lager.

D: Why? I had high hopes based on the appearance of this, but the taste has totally let me down.

Ingredients: water, malt, hop, starched treacle.
Pours orange/amber liquid with golden 2-finger head. A bit of laces. Weak smell of malt and alcohol. Unbalanced taste transforms from sweet malt and aggressive alcohol to medium "scorched" bitterness . Good carbonation, palate is crisp. In conclusion, specific decent beer, but quite right, not Dark Lager. Light haze guaranteed.

Comes in a brown half-liter long neck bottle with a plain label featuring the "golden keg" referred to in the name. "Byidyerzhanoye" means something like "preserved". Sugar is an ingredient. Bottled on 7/8/03, I opened mine on 10/7/03.

Nice clear deep amber hue under a smallish off-white head that lingers quite long but leaves only a few scattered spots of lace. The nose is very weak, with only the smallest touch of malt. The mouth is thin and highly carbonated, with a touch of sweetness. The taste opens malty, with a metallic bitter and a bit of citrus sour that is OK, but doesn't seem quite right. There are some hops here, but they are of the harsh variety, leaving a fairly metallic aftertaste. This beer is proof that looks can be deceiving, as it did not at all live up to its visual appeal.
